Södermalm around blue hour

Mariaberget on Södermalm in Stockholm offers some of the most beautiful views over the city. It is a place I often find myself returning to during my photowalks. From the heights of the hill you can look out over the rooftops of Södermalm, across the water toward Riddarholmen and the historic heart of Stockholm. It is a view that changes character with every season and every shift of light.

The streets and narrow roads leading up to Mariaberget are just as interesting as the view itself. Here you pass historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Now that spring has arrived, the light around sunset has started to change. After the long, dark winter months the evenings grow softer and brighter. The golden tones of the setting sun linger a little longer on the facades, and the transition into the blue hour feels slower and more gentle. It is a beautiful time to photograph the city, when warm light fades into cool evening tones and the first lights begin to glow in the windows and along the streets.

On this evening I spent some time wandering around Mariaberget with my camera, capturing the shifting light around sunset and into the blue hour. These images are a small selection from that walk.

All pictures taken with Fujifilm GFX100s and Fujifilm GF 45.. f2.8. This time I did not use my tripod so all pictures are taken handheld.
