Night photography in Gamla Stan
On many evenings, I find myself returning to the narrow streets of Gamla Stan with my camera and tripod. As daylight fades and the city slows down, the historic heart of Stockholm transforms into a quiet and atmospheric place — perfect for evening photography.
Gamla Stan in the evening is my absolute favorite place to photograph in Stockholm. When the crowds begin to thin out and the day fades into night, the old town reveals a completely different atmosphere. The narrow streets grow quieter, the cobblestones reflect the warm glow of streetlights, and the centuries-old buildings seem to settle into a calm that is hard to find anywhere else in the city.
For me, the combination of historic surroundings, pedestrian streets, and soft evening light makes Gamla Stan an almost perfect place for photography. Without the noise of traffic, it becomes easier to slow down and really observe the scene. I can take my time exploring the small alleys and squares, watching how the light falls across the facades and how the shadows shape the narrow streets.
When I photograph here in the evening, I usually work with a tripod. Using a tripod naturally changes my rhythm as a photographer. It forces me to slow down and be more deliberate. Instead of quickly moving from one frame to the next, I spend more time studying the composition, adjusting the framing, and waiting for the right moment. I take fewer photographs, but each image becomes more considered.
My medium format camera produces files with an impressive dynamic range, which gives me a lot of flexibility when processing the images later. The subtle transitions between highlights and shadows in the evening light are easier to preserve, allowing the final images to stay close to the atmosphere I experienced on location.
When I process the photographs, my goal is not to transform the scene, but to convey the feeling of being there — the quiet streets, the warm glow of the lanterns, and the calm that settles over Gamla Stan after sunset.
If you are interested in photographing Gamla Stan in the evening yourself, I also offer small photography workshops focused on capturing the atmosphere of the old town after sunset. Feel free to contact me if you would like more information about upcoming workshops.
